Parks on the Air (POTA) is one of our most popular club activities. Members regularly head out to state and national parks across East Central Texas to activate designated POTA reference sites, making contacts and earning awards while enjoying the outdoors.
POTA is a worldwide amateur radio program encouraging operators to set up portable stations at parks and public lands. Activators transmit from the park; hunters call in from home stations. It's a fantastic way to get outdoors and make contacts.

ARRL Field Day is held annually on the fourth full weekend of June and is the most popular on-air event in amateur radio. Leon County Ham Radio Club sets up a full multi-operator station to compete, practice emergency preparedness, and introduce the community to amateur radio.
During our most recent ARRL Field Day, LCHRC operated as a 2A class station from a city park in Centerville. The team logged over 820 contacts across CW, SSB, and FT8 modes, earning bonus points for satellite contacts, natural power, and media outreach. Several new Technician licensees made their very first HF contacts at our GOTA station.

The Leon County Ham Radio Club maintains a trained emergency communications team serving Leon County and surrounding East Central Texas communities. Our operators are registered with the Brazos Valley ARES® (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) group and coordinate with local emergency management agencies.
Amateur Radio Emergency Service
Our members participate in the South Texas ARES group, providing trained communicators for disaster relief, severe weather events, and public safety support. We train monthly and maintain go-kits ready for rapid deployment. ARES consist of local radio volunteers providing a critical human link for disaster relief. ARES- When all Else Fails
Our members participate in the Skywarn System. By receiving training with the National Weather Service, Skywarn volunteers help to keep communities safe through timely and accurate reports of severe and hazardous weather events. These reports help the National Weather Service warnings focus on events occurring in the local area.
Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service
Our members participate in the Texas RACES group, providing emergency communications supporting the state, county and local emergency management agencies. Texas RACES is the group in Texas that is the first choice for State of Texas agencies, county government and local first responders to provide vital communications if other systems fail.
